Gavel

What it does
Gavel sells two products that sit on Microsoft Word and fillable PDFs, not on Westlaw, Lexis, or a matter CMS. Gavel Workflows is no-code document assembly: you tag existing Word or PDF templates, build a questionnaire with conditional logic and calculations, then staff or clients complete a branded portal and receive generated Word or PDF output. Clio Manage can pull contact and matter fields into a workflow and send finished docs back to the matter. Zapier, DocuSign, Stripe paywalls, a template library, and an API sit on higher Workflows tiers; DocuSign and Stripe are on Pro. Gavel Exec is a separate Word add-in and exec.gavel.io web app for transactional attorneys: playbook redlines, clause draft and rewrite, missing-term flags, market benchmarking, and batch analysis. Relativity acquired Gavel in June 2026 and says products keep running while Word-to-RelativityOne sync is built; that write-back is not shipping today. It is not practice management, not e-discovery, and not a CLM repository of signed contracts.
Fit
Solo and small firms, legal aid, and legal-product shops in estate planning, family, probate, real estate, or immigration that already have Word or PDF forms and want clients to fill the questionnaire. Transactional attorneys who want playbook redlines inside Word without buying a CLM. Legal-aid programs that generate court forms from LegalServer case data.
Not a fit
Plaintiff PI shops that need medical-records or demand work. Firms that want a case or matter CMS, docketing, or trust accounting. In-house teams whose job is searching a repository of already-executed contracts. RelativityOne users expecting matter write-back in Word today. Anyone who will not spend time tagging templates or paying a Gavel automator. Lite Workflows buyers who need DocuSign or Stripe: those connectors sit on Pro. Confirm current packaging on Gavel.
