Spellbook

What it does
Spellbook is a Newfoundland contract-drafting and review tool that runs as an add-in inside Microsoft Word and Google Docs, not as Westlaw, Lexis, or a matter CMS. Review puts suggested redlines and comments into the open file against playbooks you save. Draft writes clauses or whole documents from the agreement in front of you or from a clause library. Ask answers questions about that document with citations back to provisions. Market (also called Benchmarks) compares terms to a vendor corpus of similar agreements by industry, jurisdiction, and deal type. Associate is a multi-document agent for sets such as disclosure schedules and financing packages. Incoming paper can arrive from email, Slack, or Salesforce; signed files are archived for search. Pricing is custom per seat with a vendor-stated 7-day trial (confirm with Spellbook). It is not litigation research, not e-discovery, and not a CLM system of record. You still accept or reject every redline.
Fit
Transactional attorneys and in-house commercial teams who already live in Word or Google Docs and review NDAs, MSAs, vendor paper, employment, real estate, or deal documents weekly. Fits shops that will encode house positions into playbooks rather than relying on a generic first pass. Small and mid-size firms that want a sidebar in the document instead of a separate CLM or research platform.
Not a fit
Plaintiff PI, litigation shops, or anyone whose job is case-law research or court filing. Skip if you need Ironclad-class CLM (approvals, e-sign, obligation calendars) or Clio write-back. Teams that will not install a Word or Google Docs add-in, or that need native PDF and PowerPoint review, should look elsewhere. Quote-only sale: the vendor does not publish a seat price. Operators comparing Word add-ins report first-pass redlines can stay generic unless you invest in playbooks; specialized state-specific paper still needs a lawyer.
