Litera
Document suite in Microsoft 365: draft, redline, Kira diligence, and deal close.
Chicago, Illinois · Founded 1995
- What it does
- Litera is the document-production and deal-execution stack large firms run inside Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace. It is not a research citator and not a case-management system. Create and Draft assemble Word documents from firm templates. Compare produces rules-based redlines across Word, PDF, and email, not an LLM guess at what changed. Check proofreads definitions, cross-references, and numbering. DocXtools repairs broken Word files. Clean, formerly Metadact, strips metadata before a file leaves the firm. Kira extracts provisions across large contract sets and links each finding to the source clause. Transact runs the checklist, signatures, and closing book. Lito is the agent in Word, Outlook, and the web that calls those engines. Generative answers can be switched off while rules-based compare keeps running. Foundation and Foundation 365 hold client, matter, and relationship data, with a native Microsoft Dynamics 365 path and a vendor-stated ChatGPT plugin for firm experience search. A lawyer still accepts the redline and the extraction.
- Fit
- Large and mid-size firms, and in-house legal teams, that already work in Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace and already store documents in iManage, NetDocuments, or SharePoint. Fits deal and document desks that want compare, proofing, metadata cleanup, Kira diligence, and a Transact closing checklist from one vendor, with an admin who owns the suite. Foundation fits firms that also want relationship and experience data beside the document work.
- Not a fit
- Solo and small offices that only need an occasional Word redline. Litera does not publish a price. Operators at smaller firms, and firms facing renewal increases on Compare, Create, and metadata cleanup, report quotes that are hard to justify. Not a fit for plaintiff contingency practices that need intake, medical chronologies, or write-back into Clio or Filevine. Not a Westlaw or Lexis research seat. Transact is a closing checklist and signature book, not a CLM obligation calendar. Skip it if you will not install Microsoft or Google add-ins. Desktop Compare can stay on the machine; Kira, Lito, and Foundation are not that local-only tool.
