NetDocuments
Cloud legal DMS for matters and email. ndMAX reads that file, not a research seat.
Lehi, Utah · Founded 1999
- What it does
- NetDocuments is the cloud document and email system of record. It is not a practice-management system and not a Westlaw or Lexis seat. Workspaces hold matter documents with versioning, ethical walls, and data-loss prevention. Email files to the client and matter from Outlook. Microsoft 365 is the daily surface: Word, Teams, and co-authoring. ndMAX runs on that corpus. The Legal AI Assistant answers questions across selected documents, writes summaries and chronologies, and can apply tracked edits in Word. Tabular Review builds a cited table from a folder or workspace. Files stay in the DMS. The Legal Context Graph links matters, documents, people, and communications. Legal Authorities extracts citations from uploaded documents and links each one to CourtListener, a free public case set. A lawyer still opens the opinion and checks the cite. ndConnect lets approved tools such as Harvey, Legora, and Claude read governed content. MCP agent retrieval is ndConnect Enterprise, not the base picker.
- Fit
- Law firms and in-house legal teams that need a governed document estate rather than a shared drive, and that want AI to read and extract inside the same permissions and ethical walls. Fits offices on Microsoft 365 that file email to the matter and already run a separate system for intake, time, and billing. A small office can use it when compliance or a cloud-only file is the reason, not when the only pain is slow email saving in SharePoint.
- Not a fit
- Skip it if Clio, Filevine, or Smokeball is where the file must live, including intake, billing, and plaintiff pipelines. This complements those systems. It does not replace them. Skip it if you need a published seat price before a sales call. There is no public price page. Skip it if the research library itself must be Westlaw or Lexis. Legal Authorities links cites to CourtListener, not those subscriptions. Skip it if you need an e-discovery platform with productions and legal hold. Tabular Review is extraction inside the DMS, not Relativity or Everlaw. A 3-to-5 user office that only wants basic email filing may find this more system than the job. Operators in a legaltech thread report it is aimed at larger firms and that a very small shop can be over-served. Outside-model agents are ndConnect Enterprise, not the base document picker. The lawyer still verifies cites and table cells.
